The walkthrough
63.6 seconds. Captions are burned in; an
.srt and .vtt sit beside the file.
The friction, as reported
“Because some clients are questioning and would like to see more details, and having subtotals can satisfy their needs & wants.”
Verbatim from the Xero Product Ideas board. Reproduced as a contiguous extract and checked against the harvested record.
What the walkthrough shows
- The same lines, grouped into three named sections.
- The heading row spans every column, including Qty and Price.
- Each section closes with its own subtotal, labelled tax inclusive.
- Materials carries a discounted line, so one number will not do.
- The section shows the gross figure and the discount separately.
- The three section totals sum to the subtotal already in the foot.
- The invoice total is unchanged at 4,299.00.
- Order stops being cosmetic once a subtotal depends on it.
- A section moves as one block, and its subtotal goes with it.
The assessment
The opportunity, in a different shape.
A subtotal with no heading is a number with no subject.
A named section carries the heading, the subtotal and the line order as one block.
The reasoning
The job is real and well evidenced: 1,056 votes across three ideas ask for parts of it. The proposed form is not the best one, for a reason that is concrete rather than aesthetic.
A subtotal without a heading is a number with no subject, and a subtotal without controlled line order is a number that can silently become wrong.
The better form is a section: a named group of lines with its own subtotal, inserted into the grid as a unit. It delivers what the purpose clause actually asks for, which is that the customer can see what the invoice is made of. It subsumes description-only lines, already Accepted at 565 votes, because a section heading is what those are being used for. It subsumes comment lines at 143. It makes the ordering problem tractable, because a section moves as one block rather than a floating row kept in place by hand. And it gives the subtotal a label to hang its tax basis on, which is the only way the tax interaction resolves cleanly.
A bare subtotal row is buildable and would film in about four seconds. It would also be the thing that then attracts 200 more votes asking to put a heading on it.
